Back at base we got some time to rest and regain our strength while another tactical team were sent to investigate one of General Weiss’s facilities. But the break didn’t last long before we were sent out to create a diversion, so that the other team could finish their job. Make a lot of noise and attract as many Imperial forces as you can, we were told… and hold out for as long as possible. We managed to take over the imperial base and shut the facility off to the forces outside. Now we wait for them to attack…
Keep sending them in, and we’ll keep killing them!
“Well this won’t be too tricky”. The doors are locked, all the Imperial forces were chased out of the base and Gaark and Mak are guarding the doors. They’re getting bored already with the lack of action in here. Gaark decides to charge out and kill one of the officers, who was so busy shouting order at his team that he didn’t even see what was coming. “This isn’t even a challenge!”. The frightened Stormtroopers hesitantly start firing at the door and Mak quickly follows Gaark’s lead, sniping at the Stormtroopers. “If the action won’t come to us, we’ll bring it to them!” they exclaim. He manages to take two of them down, and their assault on the door fails. They looked so bewildered and lost, not knowing where the shots were coming from! Poor mindless troopers…
Meanwhile I explore the base and find a Medi Pack, might be useful for later I think, and Jyn decides she wants part of the action too, so sticks her gun out and almost manages to kill the last Stormtrooper, “so close!”. We spot an E-Web Engineer outside in the bush, but he’s positioned all wrong… “no worries here” we smile as we close the doors behind us again. As the to and fro shooting continues, new Stormtroopers keep arriving outside and the E-Web manages to re-position himself and break the already damaged door down. Jyn takes a couple of hits while sneaking past the line of fire to check out another crate, but we have plenty of Med Packs between us, and when Mak brilliantly destroys the E-Web, we think to ourselves, “is this all they have?!“. In the same moment we utter those words two Royal Guards appear. Seems like the Empire is upping their game.
At this point all of the team have taken some hits except me. It seems we’re spending all our energy killing the stream of Stormtroopers that are being sent in, and although they’re not hitting us hard, the little scratches add up. The Empire has learned something from previous encounters, and now knows how to order the mindless troops around to avoid Jyn’s Quick Draw. We’re getting more and more frustrated, and more nervous as the enemy closes in on us. The Royal Guards have moved inside the base and they are targeting Gaark, his wookie defending is excellent and he avoids all but one hit from them. But these guards are powerful, they carry some sort of experimental arms, and at the end of the fight, Gaark is stunned.
Out of nowhere the door behind me blows up. They must have set the detonation before they retreated, and both me and Mak, who is nearby, get hit by the shrapnel. In the confusion from the explosion, the Royal Guards continue their assault on Gaark whose brave defending is wavering and now desperately needs the Bacta shot that Jyn has. She hears his loud cry for backup leaves the western room that she’s holding. We resign to losing control of the room, the facility is big and we still hold all the other areas. As she moves past the Royal Guard and helps Gaark recover, she sneakily manages to take the more wounded of them down! With all the fighting going on in the corridor, and treating out injuries, we’ve not had a single moment to pay attention to the Probe Droid that’s been slowly moving in on us. Mak disengages the droid, but it’s not enough, and as the droid attacks, Mak is wounded and the pressure on us all is mounting.
We hear another blast from within the compound, but can’t locate where it came from or what it was. Mak’s the only one who really pays attention to it, and with no one listening to him he takes out his frustration on the probe droid. As he hits it, the scrap metal smashes to the ground! A small consolation for the damage he’s suffered. The whole base is now crawling with Stormtroopers; normal units and elites… “Where did they all come from?!” As we see the remaining Guard moving deeper into the base, we know we have to stop him from re-gaining the second room, but with Gaark under attack from the elite Stormtroopers, and me fending off the other battalion, there’s very little we can do. The Imperial forces manage to regain control of yet another room.
All of the sudden it becomes clear what that explosion was. An ambush! Two Trandoshan Hunters must have found another way in, and they are now charging straight at me. In my shock and surprise my defense is poor, and the two of them cause me irreparable damage. In the back room Jyn bravely attacks the remaining Royal Guard, ending him once and for all and regaining control of the southern room, before focusing her fire and dealing enough damage on one of the Trandoshans so that I can finish him off. The Stormtroopers who saw me falling have now turned their focus on re-gaining control of the inner room. Mak tries his best to slow them down, but in the end has to catch up with them to take one of them down. Two of the Elite troopers are focusing on Gaark, knowing that he’s the strongest, while the last one take the place of his fallen comrade in the inner room. Another section of the base is out of our hands and we only have two healthy team members left. We receive word that the other team has almost succeeded, and we’re wondering how long we can stick this one out for maximum damage to the Empire.
As we re-group and get in to defense mode for the two remaining rooms of the base, my senses are shaken to the core, and I feel a great imbalance in the force. Darkness has arrived. Vader strides up towards the base, and he has a pet Probe Droid with him. We make a last effort to help heal each other where we can, to stand our ground; we are determined to drag this out for as long as possible. The remaining Trandoshan who’s been lurking around makes a move at Jyn. It feels like the presence of Vader has intensified my connection with the force, I try to channel it towards Jyn, and to our joy she evades the attack. This gives her time to heal before we have to face Vader. His proximity is making the whole team anxious, and spending energy worrying about his wrath means we’re not hitting the Stormtroopers or the officer with our full force. When he finally approaches Gaark, our defensive skills are thrown to the ground. The wound is instant. We know that we’ve held on for as long as possible, beyond what we had to do. It’s time to get out of here, and as we escape our brush with death we’re excited to hear that our efforts enabled the other team to get away clear, with vital information about Weiss’s new weapon.
